Resolutions

Kristin Blevins

Every year right around this time, it's the same thing..."My New Years resolution is..." It's usually the same thing made many years before. Lose weight, eat healthier, get a better job, get a house, etc.

Do we really need a certain time of year to decide to do those things?

Wait, so you're telling me that you're going all year long thinking you would like one, or all of these things to happen in the next year, but you aren't going to attempt to achieve any of those things until the next year?

I used to be one of those people, I would always make the same resolutions each year, start out doing great, then boom. Nothing.

To me all of those "resolutions" are things you could work towards immediately. Why hold off?

Now you might ask WHY ON EARTH DOES SHE HAVE HER OLDEST KIDS AS THE FEATURED IMAGE?!?

I love ALL of my children equally. But my oldest children, especially my son, has seen me make resolution after resolution and fail. They have seen me in their earlier years as a single Mom struggle...

I know, I know...you're wondering what the point to this is...give me a second. I'm getting there.

These two not only saw me go through so many ups and downs, many struggles. But they also watched me grow as a Mother. They watched me grow as a businesswoman.

So all those silly resolutions are pointless to me. Because the best thing I could have ever accomplished was the smile on their faces and them telling me how proud they are of me for never giving up.

Here's my point. It doesn't matter what you were hoping your New Year's resolution to be. What matters the most is your kids. What matters is how they see you as a parent. Sure, some days your kids are absolutely going to hate you. And that's okay. Just means you're doing your job right. When they grow up, they will see you were there for them and you took care of them no matter what the situation was.

So if you want to make any kind of resolution, make it about your kids. They are only little once. Love them.
